All Are Welcome!

Who We Are

Peaceful Harbor Sangha is a community of experienced and beginner Buddhist practitioners in the Portland, Maine, area. We come from many different backgrounds, spiritual traditions, and beliefs. Our group honors each members’ individual commitments by practicing compassion, loving kindness, equanimity, and joyfulness. We are an open and welcoming community for anyone who wishes to practice. We also encourage those to come who would like to explore meditation and learn more about Buddhism.

What We Do

Our communal practice includes sitting and walking meditations and studying various Buddhist teachings. Our principal teacher and spiritual guide is Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh, the founder of Engaged Buddhism, also known as “Thay” (Vietnamese for “teacher”). His interpretations of ancient Buddhist texts and his own personal teachings inspire us and point the way to deeper understanding, insight, and mindfulness. Thus, we say we practice in the tradition of Thich Nhat Hanh, and we focus our Sangha activities on the study and practice of his teachings. This does not mean, however, that we exclude the wisdom of countless other Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and Dharma teachers whose guidance also enriches our practice and our lives.

When and Where We Meet

We meet on Sunday evenings from 6:30 to 8pm at the First Parish Church, 425 Congress Street, Portland, Maine. Visit the Calendar page for details.

Please note that starting November 16, 2025, Peaceful Harbor Sangha will be moving to 160 Presumpscot Street in Portland. The new location is a dedicated space managed by a sangha from the Insight meditation tradition – Open Door Meditation Community. We look forward to practicing together in the new space!

Thich Nhat Hanh

It is possible that the next Buddha will not take the form of an individual. The next Buddha may take the form of a community–a community practicing understanding and loving kindness, a community practicing mindful living. This may be the most important thing we can do for the survival of the Earth.
